Dhaka: Bangladesh's former captain Shakib Al Hasan has reportedly delayed his return to Bangladesh due to a "security issue," potentially missing what he had announced as his final Test series for the national team.
The 37-year-old all-rounder, who last month declared his retirement from international cricket after this series, was expected to rejoin the squad for the two-Test series against South Africa starting on October 21. However, in an interview with bdnews24.com, Shakib expressed doubts about returning, citing concerns over his personal security.
"I was to return home... but now I don't think I can," Shakib said, explaining that security concerns were behind his decision. He did not provide specific details but indicated it was his "final decision" for now, casting uncertainty on his participation in the series.
Shakib, who has been in Dubai after playing in a domestic Twenty20 competition in Canada, was expected to fly to Dhaka on Thursday. However, media reports suggest that he may instead be heading to the United States.
Shakib’s political ties have also drawn attention. He is a former lawmaker with links to the party of ex-leader Sheikh Hasina, who was ousted in a student-led revolution earlier this year. Since the regime's collapse, Shakib and other political figures associated with the former government are reportedly facing investigations, including charges of murder connected to a police crackdown during the uprising.
The first Test match against South Africa is scheduled to take place in Mirpur, near Dhaka, on October 21. It remains uncertain whether Shakib will return to take part in what he had hoped would be his final international appearance.
Bangladesh’s political instability and the ongoing fallout from Sheikh Hasina’s removal continue to create a volatile environment, adding uncertainty for public figures like Shakib, both on and off the field.
